Title: Unit Tier Chart
Post by: Dr.Salamander on February 14, 2011, 07:35:09 AM
So basically a Conceptual Chart of Ideas for Classes on both, yay for new bloods and there Ideas.
.........Tyranids                           I                SM
Tier 1[termagaunt, hormagaunt I Assault, Tactical            ]                                                             cost 18
Tier 2[warrior, Lictor, Biovore     I Sgt, Special (plas), HeavyBolter(With a nerf)]                             cost 54
Tier 3[Carnifex,Thrope,Gargoyle I Vanguard, Special (melta) missile launcher]                               cost 108
Tier 4[ Trygon, or tryannofex      I Thunderhammer/stormshield Terminator or lascannon marine] cost 216
^- would just be amazing and cool to see a trygon and a ss/th Termi going at it, but its a big request with many balance issues and coding problems, I took coding in Highschool and hated it. and it was simple coding too.

Difference between sgt and vanguard is that a sgt just has a normal bolt pistol chainsword combo (chainsword would be a bit buffed) and the Vanguard would have a Powerweapon and a plasma pistol.

Loving the game though, keep up the goodwork :D.

Trygon is a bit huge for the engine to effectively deal with, given the trouble we have with just the fex which would rule it out. The maps would all have to be rebuilt to allow it to fix in them which would lead to even more crazily huge corridors and things like that.

Generally the actual problem with the tyranids are the animation, as they require entirely custom animations based on the multiple limbs and other crazy stuff. We lack a dedicated animator right now (its also why the gaunts are not playable, they would need to be re-animated for player use).

Anything that flies is also not really viable, not true flight anyway, its a real map breaker although they could be done as a floating unit similar to the way the zoe floats just now (technically its walking but its model does not touch the ground).

Everything else is just modeling.

Maybe a Hero unit, Like a Warrior Alpha  (or is it Prime Warrior)  which it would use the same model ( a little different( and it would do lots more damage or have special weapons over the normal warrior. And than on the SM side you could have a captain.

P.S.

(what program do you use to make the models/animations?)

When you die in-game you will be offered a list of classes that you have unlocked to reward you for your achievements in your previous life.  You are rewarded for wounding the enemy, capturing objectives and achieving other such mission objectives.  Wounding higher tier enemies grants higher rewards than lower tier enemies.

If you only have enough rewards for one class the game automatically choses that class and skips the class selection menu.  Tyranids always have 2 class options in 5.93 onwards ( Warrior and Stealer ), so they will always get the class selection menu.

Try this page (http://www.40ksource.com/common/wiki_manual/index.php/Classes) in the manual , the table under the "Statistical Breakdown" heading has a cost column that reflects which tier each class belongs to.

maybe destructible environments could fix the fex problem... :0
