Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: ChromeAngel on October 06, 2006, 11:03:54 PM I've just installed new anti-spam mods and cleared out a batch of spambot forum users. Applogies for the inconvienience to any non-spambot users who may have been acidentaly deleted in the process.
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: The Vastator on October 07, 2006, 02:05:11 PM great, show some burning light to those spamming heretics!
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: migb on October 07, 2006, 04:41:30 PM The spammers must be dealt with the Emperor's mercy!
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 07, 2006, 09:29:35 PM Bless the Grand Inquisitor-Lord ChromeAngel! He's purged the spamming heretics!
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: ChromeAngel on October 08, 2006, 04:52:34 PM Bah, the heathens are more devious than I thought. The new anti-spam measures dont seem to be working :/
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Alhaus on October 08, 2006, 04:55:25 PM Its because its humans, not bots
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 09, 2006, 01:25:09 PM The Grand Inquisitor has failed! Maybe the Grand Inquisitor should ban the IP? Or has he tried that?
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Typheron on October 09, 2006, 01:43:11 PM we ban IPs all the time, my sig details the number of purged spam bots.
the problem is that recently its no longer bots that are posting, we get a few and there easy to spot, but now actual people are spending their time posting spam for a living which gets round all our security measures since its a actual human and not some pre-programmed bit of garbage. rest assured the RS Inquisition will kill maim and purge all spambots and spammers to keep this forum junk free. Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 09, 2006, 02:36:29 PM May the glory of the Emperor be with you always, dear Inquisitors of the Imperium. The Emperor's light shines on us always... The Emperor's wrath covers the greatest of all those unclean and traitorous.
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Wolf on October 09, 2006, 05:40:47 PM *gets in the shower* MUST BE CLEAN OR BE PURGED!
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 09, 2006, 10:12:34 PM Yeah, same here... Well, by unclean I think the Emperor means 'evil' unclean :P
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Alhaus on October 09, 2006, 11:59:42 PM are they posting though?
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Typheron on October 10, 2006, 09:49:13 AM most of the bots only manage to create some stupidly named account and maybe get a silly sig with links in it, typically these ones are not much of a threat and dont get very far since they cant post.
Its the more complicated and the human spammers that get through, last time was yesterday and chrome got that one. Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Alhaus on October 11, 2006, 01:05:17 PM What happens if we ban all indian IPs? or failing that have email activation?
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 11, 2006, 01:42:29 PM Best weapon against threats. By the Emperor's name, I ask of you: Please switch on e-mail activation. It will save us all!
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Typheron on October 11, 2006, 02:09:09 PM the spam bots come in from all over the place, so just banning all of a countries IP aint gonna work, also theres the random chance someone will want to look at us over there (unlikly but you never know) so thats not gonna work,
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Alhaus on October 11, 2006, 02:21:59 PM I dont think Its bots though... they cant get passed the pic registration AND chromes do da. Do we have email activication?
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Khargoth on October 11, 2006, 04:01:28 PM Quote from: "Alhaus" Do we have email activication? That's not a bad idea. An idea I had is based on the swear filters. When certain words/terms are used in a post, a PM is sent to the moderators with a link, allowing them to follow it up. This saves the trouble of having to trawl through the forums looking for spam. Of course, this has the potential of filling the Mods inboxes with hordes of false-alarm warnings, so careful thought would have to be put into what particular words bring up alerts. For example, 'Sell' and 'Ebay' are bad ideas, as some people may be raising awareness of an auction they have on an army they are selling, appropriately posted in the 40k section. Any spam that does slip under the radar can be discussed to see what terms may have triggered an alert, thus an ever-improving spam detector forms. At the moment this forum doesn't get much in the means of traffic (it's logical to assume it will pick up when the mod goes public however), which means there is time to test and calibrate this system. Comments? Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: migb on October 11, 2006, 07:10:47 PM Good idea.
Automated warning signs should be: * "viagra" in any text * hyperlink in signature * weird timezone I know that some ordinary users would put a link in their sig, but it doesn't take long to check a user profile. Other ways to check for bots, that may or may not be possible: - profiles that have not read any threads - sign-up form compleated in less than 1 sec = bot And of cause, ban IP and e-mails used by bots. Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Alhaus on October 11, 2006, 07:49:45 PM Seeing as how we have alot of people here who are under 18 cant we sue these companies for offering/selling drugs to kids :P
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: migb on October 11, 2006, 08:30:20 PM Only if they are based in the country you live in...
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 11, 2006, 08:52:55 PM No, I think you can do it generally, not just locally.

A bot can follow an email link as easily as people can... pointless Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 11, 2006, 11:29:10 PM Actually, they can't. You see, a bot can't create an e-mail account. It can't check the inbox. It can't read messages. It's just limited to a few things: Posting on forums pointlessly, annoying people and some other stuff I don't know... Damn, I should know about this stuff, I'm a PC freak :( Well, I normally specialise in Hardware which is fine enough :)

Damn, I should know about this stuff, I'm a PC freak :( Well, I normally specialise in Hardware which is fine enough :) They can and they do. A bot is just a program. Anything a program can do a bot can do. When you set up an email address you use a program, when you check your email you use a program. Reading an email for confirmation links... easy coding (especialy when they are from a standard forum, with standard formatted emails). Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 12, 2006, 01:54:41 PM You know you could have a special password that only users with unrecognised IPs have to type to get in... but that would need some exellent knowledge of coding.
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Alhaus on October 13, 2006, 12:56:05 AM Well cant we change the email it sends? like, go to this link and type this code into the box?
Or maybe we should get a different host for the forums :? no other forums i know get fecking bots like this Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 13, 2006, 12:04:18 PM Good point. I hear Invision is quite cool...
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 17, 2006, 12:57:58 PM Sorry about the double post, but my idea is that we put a thread saying "This is not an advertising forum" on our board, becausde then we might get our point across to whoever is posting.
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Typheron on October 17, 2006, 01:54:11 PM you not getting this, its not a person, its not anything but an automated computer spamming sites.
warning them not to post does nothing, theres nothing to warn. stop responding to their posts, theres no point and it means i have to delete you as well. Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 17, 2006, 04:03:34 PM Guess you're right there. Hang on, I don't guess you're right, I know you're right... I'll stay out of the way. ;)
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Typheron on October 17, 2006, 07:40:56 PM i think it effects your post count too, but feel free to flame bots in this thread, or PM me and chrome if you spot one.
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 20, 2006, 03:47:49 PM I see someone tried posting porn... they didn;t really get very far, I see
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Typheron on October 20, 2006, 07:53:35 PM yes, the automated defences shot that one down.
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Wolf on October 20, 2006, 11:45:22 PM *mumbles to himself* bah automated, chrome just locked me in room with a joystick and tv, and said shoot, automated my ass *curses*
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 21, 2006, 02:00:11 AM Wow, someone posted with a list of antivirus software... Although it may be useful, we find it-

Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Brother-Captain Severus, Deserted Legion 3rd Company Master on October 23, 2006, 12:30:13 AM (migb) he is the imperial inquisition... in a way
(Wolf) Nah, let's just sit back and enjoy the show. *stands behind the lines and eats popcorn* Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Khargoth on October 24, 2006, 02:37:00 PM Cripes, you guys DO get a lot of spam bots...
A common anti-bot measure is having several letters and numbers placed unevenly in an image, with various lines and squiggles making it nigh-on impossible for even clever bots to analyse, while a person can visually discipher the difference between a line and part of a letter, with their big muscular brain. Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Typheron on October 24, 2006, 07:57:01 PM yeh we have that, problem is a few of them are actually people being paid to spam places.
how low will people stoop to get cash... Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Wolf on October 25, 2006, 12:38:50 AM *puts his hands down the sofa searching for odd coins*
ohh :( Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: migb on October 25, 2006, 12:55:23 PM Just imagine the kind of money you could earn, if you had a group of about 50 dedicated spammers, and got paid not to spam places.
Plus the income from those websites that pays you to spread their junk... Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Alhaus on October 26, 2006, 02:26:12 PM Its people in India getting paid 20p a day :P
Title: Anti-Spam measures Post by: Wolf on October 26, 2006, 02:31:41 PM ahah like call centres ^^
