Title: Alpha 6.23 Balancing Asymetry
Post by: ChromeAngel on May 13, 2012, 04:03:14 PM
Exterminatus Beta 6.20 (http://www.40ksource.com/downloads.php) has been generally well received, with plenty of folks joining in the regular games scheduled through the steam community group (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/exterminatusgame).

Feedback suggests player are feeling some balance tweaks are needed to make classes on the same tier of the reward system equally valuable.  Alpha 6.21 aims to correct that balance with a light touch.

  • chromeangel.co.uk (http://www.chromeangel.co.uk/Exterminatus/Downloads/ex_alpha_patch_6.21)

Installation instructions
If you already have a copy of alpha 6.13, delete it.  If you don't already have Beta 6.20 download and install it as normal.  Copy the sourcemods/ex folder containing beta 6.20 to sourcemods/ex_alpha (so you can still play the beta version too).  Extract the 6.21 patch, then the 6.22 patch  to you sourcemods folder ( they should overwrite files in the ex_alpha folder ).  Restart Steam.  You should now see both the Exterminatus Beta 6.20 and Exterminatus Alpha listed in your library.

Features
  • New version of CIty Conflict by DarkMarine

Tweaks
  • Nerfed the splatter radius from Deathspitter hits from 96 to 80
  • Nerfed the size of the warriors weapon hitboxes (may have be acting as a shield)
  • Nerfed the reload speed of the heavy bolter considerably
  • Improved ceiling clearance between Cave and Dock objectives on ex_spacehulk ( plus some aesthetic changes )
  • Buffed the health of the Genstealer class from 85 to 105
  • Buffed the Terminator classes resistance to melee attacks by 10%

Bug Fixes
  • Prevent both teams spawning at the Cave objective on Space Hulk if the point is re-captured.

[edit]
Some of the balance tweaks from alpha 6.21 were not as effective as I had hoped, so patch 6.22 improves on the Genestealer and Terminator buffs.   DarkMarine has made more improvements to City Conflict, including better access to the tower for large tyranid classes.

Tweaks
  • Buffed the health of the Genstealer class from 105 to 110

  • Minor changes to ex_spacehulk

Features
  • New version of CIty Conflict by DarkMarine

[edit]
Alpha 6.22 had the best balance i've ever seen in EX, but the Tyranid warrior was still a little too strong, so i've nerfed it a bit for this build.

Installation instructions
You should have the 6.22 alpha installed before you start (see installation instructions above).  Extract the 6.23 patch to your sourcemods folder ( they should overwrite files in the ex_alpha folder ).  Restart Steam.  You should now see both the Exterminatus Beta 6.20 and Exterminatus Alpha listed in your library.

Tweaks
  • Nerfed the Deathspitter damage from 28 to 25 per hit
  • Buffed Deathspitter splatter radius from 80 to 96 (undone the previous nerf)
  • Tweaked the tyranid warrior hit boxes.
  • Switched to an older "Run North" animation for the Tyranid Warrior (I think it has blending issues causing the warrior to "surf" under certain conditions).
  • Temporarily added ex_city_conflict_v2 to the default map cycle

Bug Fixes
  • ex_orbital, Prevent the reactor room door clipping into the reactor when it opens.
  • ex_ichar_iv, added navigation nodes to prevent servo skulls bumping in to walls and pillars.  Prevent players getting locked in the ore box when marines cap the Garage.
  • Resized the ex_city_conflict loading screen to fit.

[edit]
This week we have a small alpha patch as none of the maps have been updated.  Once more i'm trying to home in on the perfect balance.  I hope this will be the next Beta as the over powered Warriors in beta 6.20 are starting to annoy me.

  • chromeangel.co.uk (http://www.chromeangel.co.uk/Exterminatus/Downloads/ex_alpha_patch_6.24.zip)

Installation instructions
You should have the 6.23 alpha installed before you start (see installation instructions above).  Extract the 6.24 patch to your sourcemods folder ( they should overwrite files in the ex_alpha folder ).  Restart Steam.  You should now see both the Exterminatus Beta 6.20 and Exterminatus Alpha listed in your library.

Tweaks
  • Buffed Carnifex armour to make it 20% resistant to Meltagun damage.  This is intended to make the Veteran a more preferable 2nd tier marine class.
  • Prevented servo skulls from blocking player movement.

I just got back Monday but me and two others now run a Steam group. I can now nag people to help alpha/beta test Source mods on a bigger level than before. So schedule the event as soon as you can Chrome.

deviant Art are fraking lazy slackers.  :P

6.23 test tonight.  We had some crashes on map change ( the server in one case ), no MDMP created on my client though.   No new bugs reported.  Coldheiser seems happy with the warriors tweaked hitboxes.

Fexes do need to crouch to get through the new reactor room doors.

The warrior does feel less shooty, sapping isn't nearly as effective.

Someone mention Nerfing the melta to make the veteran and specialist more balanced (damage is currently 19, was 18 and 20 in previous versions), although i'm tempted, but there is nowhere to go with this except backwards.  Maybe just tweaking the fex armor rule that lets meltas through would do.

thoughts?

I suggested it but changing the armor rules so that plasma does more damage per second to the Fex then melta sounds like a nice idea to try out.

Welcome to the forum Coldheiser.

Status update
Now that the Beta 6.25 installer has been successfully tested I plan to have a "public" release of that version on Saturday the 9th of June.  I shall be uploading and mirroring copies of 6.25 until then.  If you can host or mirror your own copies please send me the URLs to I can list them on the downloads page.
