Title: Space Hulk maps?
Post by: Frost on October 25, 2006, 02:09:30 PM
Do you guys have any plans to create some space hulk style maps? I think it could fit in really well with this mod.

not at this time, currently the entire focus of the game is based in a planets surface being sometime after the inital Nid invasion after their attacking ships have been driven off and the ground war still rages.

Also given the nature of the tyranid control system, you get broods which you order arround to help you fight, it would make combat in a tight enviroment undo-able as there would not be room for the broods to move arround properly.

There is a option much later down the line (think 2-3 years) depending on the success of the mod that we will move into other areas, but thats a distant thought and not liable to happen anytime soon.

I'm not sure if Genestealers are making it into the mod, but a single space-combat map with Genestealers being the only 'nid class available, with no gaunt shields available would be a pretty cool addition. Although I can forsee some gameplay issues, as the gaunt swarms are being implemented to blance the massive damage Marine weapons do to nids...

So a cool idea, but impractical.

its going to be a easy game for the marines.

Khargoth is right, it would be a turkey shoot, and would require probably re-balancing of the marines, which is somethign we dont wanna do as it becomes another mod in its own right.

If your standing at the end of a long corridor with a heavy bolter those nids are screwed till you run out of ammo.

If you keep genestealers in the new game-mode only, you don't have to re-balance marines at all.
Just make some very tough+fast 'stealers, and make the maps favor the tyranid side.

But yes, I see the problem with long corridors.

Na space hulk should just be traditional Termies VS stealers imo :p

i would agree with that, but still it means making termis and you know what that means...

that you have to make termies  :?

no the other thing, the one we want to avoid.

I didnt say make it i just said space hulk should just remain Termies vs Stealers.
Personally i dont think we should have termies in EX and i dont think were doing them. Though have to admit it would be cool

Make your own damn space hulk mod. And have model exchange between you and EX.

*is still trying to figure out the "other" thing that the team is trying to avoid*

Let me guess:
The other thing is that introducing Terminators to 'hulk would mean that all the fanboys bombards the team with requests to put termies into regular Exterminatus?

Bingo, and they can be a pain to balance, and typically end up over used for what they are.

the other issues is if one thing gets in, a precident is set and other people start wanting things, with termis it would probably be new nids, like a tyrant or something cos of how uber they are.

i should once more point out that once the first public version has been released there will be discussions on where the mod should go next, at which time everything and anything is up for debate.

a good point, and worryingly true.

Well, limiting Genestealers and Terminators to 'Space Hulk' maps would emphasise their uniquenes, as well as sort out gameplay issues. I doubt it would be that hard to balance two units with each other? Maybe four, if you include Broodlords and Terminator Sargeants. I think this is an idea that should be seriously considered when the initial mod is complete. It's not too far a cry from Exterminatus (heck, you could implement it into it as a preliminary space battle before the 'nids make planetfall), and is a relatively small project with potential for several maps, which makes it a good candidate for follow-up content to RS2's release, IMO.

And as to the 'fanboy' issue, it's not like you don't already have to cope with heaps of requests as it is, eh?

mh, but isn't there a repetitiveness risk?

the map would have to be planned in a similar way to the EX city, that is we draw it up before hand, plan it and then base what is effectivly a campain in it.

There would need to be a series of objectives based off the space hulk board game through the enviroment, it would work is a prelude to the 'nid invasion as a space hulk typically is used to infect systems with genestealers which draw the main nid forces to the system while they spread rebellion and de-stabilse things on the planets there.

On the major assumption that it was to happen then it would act as the above and would perhaps be only 2-3 maps involving the cleansing of the hulk and its destruction (a small stealer force having already gotten off some other way without the ultras knowing it).

This would do 2 things, it would allow the ultras a reason to arrive before anyone else and be fighting the main invasion when it arrives (there already there dealing with the hulk) and serve as the mini mod.

Although it would be very limited, there is onyl so much you can do in a space hulk.

in the end, we will see how things go when we put out public release.

Alhaus pwned everything :D Besides that statement, I think Space Hulk should only be used for complex-like maps...

actually less hills, more cityscape. In fact if i remeber right here is only 1 maajor hill, and thats outside the city to the south, although it depends on whose map your looking at as me and chromes differs slighty.
