Title: Map to the stars (AKA what will you be shooting each other in)
Post by: Typheron on October 22, 2008, 09:41:05 AM
Here is a list of whats been worked on map wise, you will have seen a good bit of "digsite" in the vids and screenshots. All names  with "Ex" in front are final, all others are code-names since we dont have final names for some of them.

"Ex_Digsite" - <Awaiting Final Approval>

"Ex_Spacehulk" - Almost Done, final tweeks required (95%)

"Ex_Thunderhawk" - Near Finished (99%), minor tweeks required.

"Ex_City_Block" - Playable and in detailing/testing (50%) - Formally called table top

"Ex_Tomb" - Sketched out, some detailing but requires extensive testing (30%)

"Ex_Lycantium" - Working layout with detail being added over time, objectives still to be finalised (Chromeangel's)

"Ex_Lycantium_Small" - Smaller version for less players, Work in progress.

"Ex_Hive" - Working, playable and looking spiffy (Chromeangel's)

"Ex_Station" - Re-built from older map, further testing and detailing required (60%)

"ship" Unknown status.

"citygates" - made for v1 of the MDK, works but has bugs relating to the spawn system, friend of the mod mapper working on it.

Test Maps:

"Bunker" - built as a test map, its the grey one with the rain from the screenshots, not for public consumption

"big-ass-city" - again built as a test of the thunderhawk/harpy spawn system, a big open city, probably wont be seen in game by the public.

Currenty we have myself and chromeangel (when hes not coding) working on maps. A few others have produced stuff for us in the past but are now too busy to update them, which is fair enough. A bunch of poeple have tried mapping and not got very far with it mainly due to install problems with the SDK and hammer.

We have NO on staff mapper at all, me and chromeangel are doing it mainly because no one else has the time and volenteers have been few and far between. Chrome is the coder and mod leader and im supposed to be working on models, animation and writing the news. So its not going well really.

Isn't there a map called ex_lycantium or something similiar? That one looked pretty good from the screens.

Update, due to some mad mapping thunderhawk hit test stage in a little less than 4 hours, one day later it was on its 4th revision and working. Still needs work but list updated to accomodate it.

Thunderhawk is having several of its elements re-built to reduce the repeatative nature of it as it stands right now (its basically symetrical). Mainly this takes the form of a new spawning area for the tyranids. Theres a cave with a hole punched in the roof of it, more work required as the map is still sketchy in places.

Digsite is fixed, there will be a few optimisations but beyond that its as it will be for version 1.

tabletop is sketched out but nothing more has happened with it as im unhappy with the layout.

Chromeangel has been cooking something up too, which im sure he will show off at some point.

I've been hard at work porting EX to the OrangeBox SDK and Typheron is having problems with AOL, so not much map progress this month.  My second map "Hive" that was in the news last month is about 50% done.  I'm planning a full news post for this weekend.

Updated to include recent developments, digsite, thunderhawk and tabletop affected.

Digsite will have to be entirly re-built, it wont be available for V1.

another update, digsite *may* be working again, a ton of bug huntying and a little luck may have fixed it, we will have to test it more to be sure.

Update:

Digsite is now working, although requires re-texturing to improve it, part of the problem was outdated textures Vs Orange Box versions.

Spacehulk is also back up and running, again outdated textures as well as a map leak causing issues. It will need balance testing to ensure its not dominated by one side or the other.

Thunderhawk continues to be improved with an entirly new tyranid spawning area added, next on the to fix list is improving the cliffs that surround it.

Tabletop has been compile and tested briefly, its still extremly sketchy and needs work.

Not to revive a dead topic, but I just wanted to say I would be willing to map as much as I can when I am not busy with school work.  Nothing is written in stone but once I start to feel my way around hammer again I will start thinking up ideas for maps, asking you guys about them, and then trying to build 'em :P

But I am pretty dedicated when it comes to map-making (Its the only thing I can do for extended periods of time) and I won't just up and leave the site, I haven't made any really completed maps but then again I didn't think I had a serious chance of anyone looking at my maps thinking about adding them to a whole mod.  And some of my junior efforts may not look so good but its just something to keep me occupied while I come up with some more serious ideas for maps and things.

My steam: Krovick

or ninjapanda44@hotmail.com

anyone is free to add me to steam, also hit me up on vchat.

Map list updated to reflect the works done in the last 5 months including the addition of new maps that work has begun on.

Still no staff mapper.
