isn't the armor too shiny?
and another thing: I think that the shoulderpad's "borders" (the white one) are too wide.

Maybe not too wide but too white!

He's cool, but...
I think the shoulderpads are too long, and their borders are too large also.
And his "arm-band" is too thick, it shouldn't be much thicker than the under-arm protector.
I don't know Bob is lighted on the dark pic, but if it's internal light, it comes from some strange places.

I agree that the shoulder pads are too long, vertically. And the borders on them are a tad too thick. Also, what's with the white bands around his wrists? I can't recall having seen anything like that on the minis or artwork.

Other than those minor quibbles, he's looking pretty damn good!

sorry i think the skin shouldnt be that shiny. i know its metal but theres also paint :-D
also the edges of the shoulderpads are to big i think :-D
but i guess its more "proxy" like?
(constructive criticism)

its nice to see some shots

I think its quite like the tt model
at least the one piece old ones, or if you place the shoulderpads as far down as you can on the new ones...

Their is currently a bug in the Source engine causing environment mapped (reflective) surfaces to reflect too much, this is probably why he looks too shiny (although it is supposed to be slightly reflective).

Notice in the dark picture how Al's view model is also bright? Same bug.

i would really like to see Bob with these proportions, he would look more of a fear-inspiring spacemarine, and less like a miniature:

http://uk.games-workshop.com/spacemarines/who-are/images/marine-vignette.jpg

Bob does have reflection problems. Make him less shiny?

good call Zenarion!
poor Bob, all critics :D

The relection is most likely because i did a fast compile instead of a normal one :P
Also that pic is a Crimson Fist, and they have darker armour than UMs

How many polys?

Post by: ChromeAngel on January 12, 2006, 08:47:22 AM
Very close to 4,000 polys.

i meant the body proportions. not the texture. the CF looks more menacing, because of his small head and huge body. sort of like the Hulk :)

Also, while making screenshots, switch on some Anti-Aliasing :) and good texture filtering. It is just an image, doesnt have to run at 100 FPS when taking screens :)

It's easier to make a SM menacing and non-miniature when you remove the helmet. If you add the helmet his head would grow quite a bit.
Which is why many artists have done that, even though there is no reason at all for a SM to remove his helmet during a battle...

But they do anyway...

Quite a few of the characters go into battle with their helmets off. Maybe it's too inspire their troops. Or maybe its so that the minitures are more striking. :-/

Space Marines see them self as super humans... what they also are but i thnik they show theirs battle scars (they are proud of them and without helmet they get more ;-D) and show their belief in the emperor because they wont die as long as the emperor is watching

OOh, realistic SM size! yay!

Looking good :)

taking their helmets off is to make the model more striking more than anything, i mean in a war zone would you take your helmet off?

Are space marine armour suits sealed up like a space suit? So that they can perform in unbreathable atmospheres or in a vacuum? Because that could make for some very interesting settings.

Of course, in that case, they would *really* need to keep their helmets on.

Title: Some Bob pics ^^
Post by: Typheron on January 15, 2006, 01:41:15 PM
yeh they are.

The space marines armour is entirely sealed so they can operate in serveral adverse conditions. There are stories of assults on low grav moons by marine chapter (those vent things on the side of their backpacks are actually monouvering thrusters, the vents are the perfortated bits at the top of the pack), Undersea attacks on ocean floor complexes and into the top layers of gas giants to attack ships hiding there.

now what a map those would make...

Post by: Wolf on January 15, 2006, 01:55:29 PM
they would be good, but can nids breathe under water, and in space ^^

Title: Some Bob pics ^^
Post by: Typheron on January 15, 2006, 02:18:35 PM
given how adaptable they are, i would say yes although more underwater than space.

you could always do the SM attack on a dormant hive shjip as it exits the warp, they take a little while to wake up after a warp trip and SM squads assult them and set charges in them to take them out at this point during a nid invasion.

You said space, I say...
Space hulk action!  :D
The mysterious warp-floating space hulks are often infested with Tyranids. And the SM could be sent on a mission to retrive some long lost artifact or secret that are pressumed to be onboard the space hulk. Exactly as in the Ragnars Claw second novel.

Post by: The Vastator on January 15, 2006, 06:57:47 PM
yeah, a space hulk action would be good.
Different types of map environments would be great.

Post by: Ozymandias on January 15, 2006, 10:17:47 PM
Genestealers at least can function in a vacuum. Somewhere in the fluff is a bit about most space hulks being depressuried and open to the vacuum, but the 'stealers can survive in it.

I think its safe to say that other tyranids would be able to survive in vacuum too.

Post by: blackt on January 15, 2006, 11:08:05 PM
its said in the codex that the nidsrace is "designed" to be able to live in vacuum... i guess they have somekind of airbags inside :-D

nidz can breath under water, atleast according to the 2:ed Codex..believe it was when they stormed "Tyrant" (Planet from which they got their name, if anyone should not know) that they had to walk under water as 90% of the surface was covered in it :D

Post by: Shadowdragoon on January 16, 2006, 08:30:37 PM
even if they couldn't they would adapt to the environment

Title: Some Bob pics ^^
Post by: blackt on January 16, 2006, 11:37:19 PM
on the other side... they are aliens... maybe they dont need to breath and take all they need be absorbing biomass?

plant is called 'Tyran' and I don't think bob should be build in ridiculous proportions. Those drawings might work in artwork, but they'd most likely look absolutely wrong when animated.

I'm still not perfectly happy with bob either, though I can't point my finger to it exactly. the white finish definitely plays a part in it.

Are there any chance we could get a blue-gold colour scheme for the Ultras, as GW have begun to use? It looks far better on the models than white did, I don't know if it would have the same effect on-screen though.
Btw, is anybody working at Bob atm? He needs his hands fixed, the wrist should be about as thick as the arm, and the shoulder pads needs to be a bit smaller. They are about Terminator-size right now.

atm he is skinned for Ultramarines 1st company, which are the ones famed for fighting the nids

I've made some slight tweeks to Bob over the weekend

better, worse or what changes?

Title: Some Bob pics ^^
Post by: The Vastator on January 23, 2006, 11:09:54 AM
definitely better, the shoulderpads seems ok now.

Title: Some Bob pics ^^
Post by: migb on January 23, 2006, 04:47:02 PM
Better, no doubt.
I still think the wrist should be improved, so the arm goes smoothly into the hand.

He still looks liek he has a tacticle symbol on his right shoulder pad. 1st company dosnt have tacticle squads :P

i think that the wrists are fine, it is how they are on the models

migB, take a good look at the marine models, they have cuffs, their arms dont connect straight to their hands.  You can see them here

http://uk.games-workshop.com/spacemarines/miniature-gallery/18/

and even more clearly in the marine artwork.

Well, OK.
Maybe just a bit more flat, then.

Y'know, the shoulder pads are there to protect the sides of the head on Space marines...I read that in a BL book somewhere along the line   . So maybe make them a bit bigger? Also, they dont take up half of the arm...do they?

Title: Some Bob pics ^^
Post by: migb on February 10, 2006, 07:56:00 PM
Well, have a look at the models, link posted earlier.

The shoulder pad seems fine, but it's placed a bit higher up on most models, giving better protection of the head.

Exactly what i meant, mig.

If you like at the minatures you'll see that the top of the pads sit about half way up the "ears", just above the rebeather tubes at the front... just as bob's are

By hunching down and shruging his shoulders up (as you do when under fire), this would bring the top of the pads up to or above eye level.

Post by: migb on February 12, 2006, 10:51:42 PM
Some miniatures got them like it is now, some higher.
If you got the animations to move it higher at times, it's great.  :)

Yeah, i never eally thought about hunching   .
