Title: Civillan vehicles
Post by: ChromeAngel on February 05, 2006, 04:17:37 PM
Does anyone have any ideas what imperial civillan vehicles look like?  I'd like to have a  few wrecked or abandoned in the maps were planning.

Have they evre been shown or described in the fluff? or are we free to make them up?

I really think it's depending upon the world they live on.
For a heavily industrialized world, I would think most transport was via public trains/metro.
But I can imagine an attack bike with less armor and no guns, as well as unarmored land speeders with windows for rich people. And cars would probably still be in fasion on some worlds.
And small aircrafts/starships like in Star Wars.

No teleports. As written in the Eisenhorn triology, teleports are extremely rare artifacts from the dark age of technology, and they are almost exclusivly used by Terminator squads.

actually yea i could see there being a really gothicy dark underground railway system for transport but seeing as you want wreckages seeable, go with starwars/minority report/modern day cars/hovercrafts/hovercrafts     jsut mix all them 2geva lols  :)

I'd go for heavy looking vehicles... loud looking. The type of city you want wouldn't be very advanced tech... if you're going for hover, go for a very low hover tech, possibly involving some steam ;)

anyone seen the movie "Immortal" by Enki Bilal?
the style of the "cars" there (although they do hover) would fit pretty well into 40k i think.

some steampunk-concepts would fit as well.

you could even try to get a hand on the shadowruns 2nd. Ed. "Riggers Blackbook". there are a few nice designs too.

only thing ive ever seen is converted stealer cult stuff, using civilian vechiles and turning them into weapon toating mini tanks.

mianly i think it will vary from planet to planet but i would think that it would be similar to what we have today, although more in function than form given the imperium styling.

You could use the white HL2 car, re-texture it and add some sort of wheels?

maybe everyone walks everywhere?  :D

A walking population is much easier to control apprently...

Although being a capital city I imagine there will be public transport laid on.  Quite how you apply imperial gothic to tube trains and trams I dont know  :P

Prehaps a few hover limos for the higher up imperial clergy, but they will probably have fled already...

I brought the subject up because i'm not comfortable with using HL2 cars in a 40k city, it just doesnt feel right to me.

Depending on the world, yes.
They do walk or sail everywheree on Fenris, the viking-age planet of Space Wolves recruitment, but they wouldn't do that in a 'modern' city.

mad idea :!:

I was thinking about how walkers, like the IG sentinel would be used in civillan life and this mad picture of a sedan chair being carried by a pair of walking machines sprang to mind.  While I type the idea refines itself as mechanical horse or walking motorbike.

A civil version of the Inquistitions Throne of Judgement, perhaps?

less =][= symbols, more baggage space. I know in sme of the comic nobles are seen being carried arround cedan chair style, makes sence they would make a vecile out of it.

Imperium is in its darker ages. Technology is rare. I cannot imagine any Rich people even existing on a hive world.

Some kind of industrial looking cars i think. Google up vechicles from behind the Iron Curtain, from lets say, 1920-1970 ies. I would say that they are a good source for inspiration.

functional design is the key here. nothing fancy.

I can, and the fluff definately can.
Remember, even though the state controls both govornment, military and religion, it is still a liberal system, in the economic sense.
There will be very rich people that owns the factories and makes piles of money on off-planet trade.
And the high government officials are paid good money, and they also have to live somewhere.

So there is definately expensive vechiels around, though the game could stick to the worker areas only.

If tanks arent hovering, why should cars? Btw, fluff is this.
Families own the hives, and they live in the main spines. Each section and the city is owned by different cadres, be it slums or industrial.
There are alsoa regiment of IG there, made from the population.
Now THATS fluff :)

I had an idea. 40k technology is very blunt and chunky, not a lot of smooth flowing lines, and everything seems to be heavy and thick. What kinds of vehicles reflect this? cars from the 1920-1950's of course! If you look in Codex: Chaos Space Marines, inside the back cover (the entire Studio IW on display) you can see a car crushed by a long-distance powerline support. It looked very '40k' in that it was heavy, and thick, yet still smacked of class. Go look at some Bentley's in the early 40's. Cars are still plentiful in 40k, but the majority of the population does rely on public mass transport. Upper-middle class peoples like members of the Arbites and upper-echelon Ministorum executives would have personal transport, although not exactly very luxurious. Aristocrats and upper-class peoples would definately have personal transport, a hover-limousine sounds very appropriate, other things would be small shuttle-craft and helicopters. Plus you can bet there would still be light mover vehicles like lorries and rigid-chassis trucks. Even just a few forklifts and a moving van adds atmosphere to something like an industrial area.

As for the lower classes, you can bet they'd rely on something like the Metro or Subway lines. An interesting idea for map design might be subway tunnels, with the occasional wrecked train (full of mutilated corpses of course, mini 'horror scenes' in maps add heaps of atmosphere) as an obstacle, forcing players to advance single-file either side of the cars. Another obvious one is to have collapsed sections of above-ground railroad to make map borders.

Another good idea for civilian vehicles is crashed aircraft. Things like the Aquila Lander and Arvus Lighter don't exactly look 'military only', and I could very well imagine a Thunderhawk Heavy Lifter being put to use on a Forge World.

One thing to avoid would be personal transport that isn't luxurious. Bicycles are a classic example. No-one in the Imperium would ride a bike, except maybe some blonde-haired youth on an Agri-world. And no aristocrat would lower themself to putting effort into moving. The walking chair idea is hilariously perfect, although it would look a little silly sitting randomly on the map. Perhaps one fallen on its side, with a suitably rich-looking corpse tangled among it, and plenty of blood splattered on the chair?

No, that's not fully true. Some military vehicles have much in common with the civilian vehicles of Imperium like for example there are tractors or bulldozers pretty much identical with Leman Russ tanks thanks to the now lost STC technology. And of course then there are stuff that's both in civilian and military use like arvus lighters. But generally, people don't cruise around with Land Raiders without guns. My suggestion for the civilian vehicles would be to use the CSM codex look like someone already suggested before. I think they just look right.

Post by: Khargoth on September 03, 2006, 10:18:14 AM
I can imagine the Chimera chassis being used in civilian applications, the Leman Russ body however seems to be more designed to carry heavy armour, something civilans aren't worried about. And I very much doubt things like Rhinos would be used by civilians, for starters they have a Machine Spirit that needs tending to, and they are a very 'exclusive' vehicle in the Imperium, being limited to the Adeptus Astartes and the Chambers Militant of the Inquisition. Rhinos are sometimes owned by the Arbites, and in those cases they are considered very valuable assets.

I think something like a rigid truck, with small sets of tank treads instead of wheels would look very appropriate in 40k.

Post by: migb on September 03, 2006, 04:43:25 PM
I agree that pretty much every veichle used by the Space Marines are too rare, expensive and advanced to be used as civilian veichle.

The tank-track tractor sounds like a good idea, but pretty displaced in an urban setting. Unless it is inside a machine factory in the city.
Something like a revamped Rolls Royce with pleanty of imperial symbols would be fitting for royalty and top officials in the administration.
And of cause there should be trains for public transport. They should have a heavy industrialized look, pretty much like the trains in Iron Grip.

Title: Civillan vehicles
Post by: Typheron on September 04, 2006, 07:48:15 PM
depends on the nature of the train, in the lower city level then yes, but in the upper levels of the building i could see more sleak things running arround for the higher classes.

Title: Civillan vehicles
Post by: Fulgrim on September 04, 2006, 08:36:06 PM
True, but would those rich and powerful enough to live on upper levels of a city humble themselves by going with public transport? Assuming that they would I'd imagine them like ornamented and armoured modern-time bullet trains.

And of the lower level trains, I would imagine them to be something like NY or east European underground with less graffiti and more bolts and plates.

Post by: Typheron on September 04, 2006, 10:50:46 PM
more than likly, as how else do you move between the upper levels, although i woudl think the trains would be "private" like hiring a bus or the like. Remeber AG tech in the imperium is rare.

Right, maybe those upper class trains are not that public but I was thinking more limousines and private cars, on which we have already had some discussion

Hmmm, a very interesting vehicle that looks like it'd suit the 40k universe is the new-ish Chrysler 300c, it's a nice mix of old and new, and I can very easily imagine Adeptus Arbites detectives driving about in it. Maybe try and create a similar style for prop vehicles?

Another idea to toss around is walker vehicles, Forgeworld's Forked Loader Sentinel is a good example. Maybe a big four-legged walker with a crane winch assembly suspended under its body? Most of the fluff I've read mentions Imperial cities to be a hectic mix of industrial, administration and hab-blocks, with heavy transport vehicles often moving through buisness districs and the like.
