If you're going down that road, a weapon load out screen would probably the best way to go.
After selecting your character, a load out screen appears with different weapon choices.
Of course, this would mean that more points would be needed not only to acquire new characters but also arm them with your desired weapons.
That would perhaps, however, lessen the issue of being able to continuously use a high powered character after even a single kill. This would result in less masses of Carnifex' and Heavies.

It could be a desert or wasteland, but that does not necessarily mean the Tyranids won't go for it. If there is a human population of billions on the world that will more than suffice for biomass.
However, yes, if it is a barren ball of rock or ice with absolutely no life and no biomass to be consumed then it would be passed straight by.

I mean a carnifex should be able to go through 3-4 Tactical space marine squads, not just 3-4 single marines Of course, Should those thirty or forty Space Marines deem it wise to all stand in close formation and allow the Carnifex to plough straight through them.

Not my first go, no, in fact I've been writing for years now. I have another story on these boards, Glory Boys, if you want to check it out, though it isn't some of my best. Could you point out where I needed more description? That would help me see if I refrained from the description for a reason.

Well, now that you mention it, since relatively all Space Marines are horrendously weak against Tyranid melee attacks (not that this isn't accurate to lore), having a tank unit wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea.
