Any more options to tone graphics?

My machine is a tad old, but the game usually runs smoothly with this mod.  But whenever there is an explosion, zonethroape cloud, or melta gun to my face, time basically slows and I die(epic lag).  Anyway I could tone down those features so the game will run smoother?

Nothing mod specific, however you can try messing with cl_particle_max_count the default is 0 which I take to mean unlimited.
