a hive node is the bit of the tyranid that acts as a psycic relay for instructions. All nids have a version of it and are able to be in contact with the hive mind through it, but only warriors and larger tyranid creatures have the true hive node through which they can send orders to the smaller creatures after receving messages, directions, whatever from the norm queens.

its basically a nid radio but the instructions are absolute.

Hive node is infact the name of one of the biomod upgrades available to tyranid creatures.  This biomod allows a brood to remain under the tyranid player's control when they are oustide of the usual tyranid synapse range, operating beyond the control of larger tyranids.

I plan to use this in EX to increase the number of brood creatures in balanced games by allowing players to play as a brood with the hive node biomod (in this case the player will have no body, just the creatures that make up their brood).

This sounds good.
I was a bit worried about the talk that it would be warriors versus marines, with marines having grenades if outnumbered, and Tyranids having 'gaunts if outnumbered.
I feared that there would be a very small number of Nids present. But you have relieved me of my fear
