You may have noticed these awards in the various orange box games, it seems to me that it would be easy enough to add this sort of thing to EX. Their are certainly some tactics that require recognisable skill in EX.
achievement ideas: Purity Seal - play the same class for an entire map Valour Award - make 3 consecutive kills with the chainsword without dying Promethium Prince - make 4 consecutive melta kills without dying Brood Master - make 4 consecutive kills with your brood creatures Predator - make 3 kills as Lictor without dying
The numbers would have to be tweaked during balance testing, but you get the idea.
What do you guys think? Do achievements fit into the 40k universe?

Not bad idea, though wouldnt it be better to have achievements for completeing objectives more than kills?

I was just trying to be consistent with the OB games, you don't get achievements for capping in TF2, since capping is it's own reward. Were you suggesting something more subtle?

I was just thinking rewards for caps might encourage team play a bit, and not encourage frag whores

They have got a similar system on xbox live, I will have a look at things they are using for achievements for some ideas. Might be worth considering thinking up some team working based achievements?

Team based achievements tend to be hard to detect, where as classes and kills are more easily tracked. But if you can think of some i'm all ears.

Quake Wars (I've played the demo only) has the same feature with some kind of XP/achievements. And in QW you earn small upgrades as well, like faster lock-on for rocket launcher or the option of using a grenade launcher.
Actually I like the Orange Box idea better, since it's more clear what goal you'll have to meet to get the achievement. That have often kept me playing, or returning to TF2 instead of trying out a different game.
And team achievements can be really frustrating to meet. It usually up to pure luck whether you can get on a team that is able to defend Well without loosing a single objective, or whatever. Unless you are part of a clan, of cause.
Some of the TF2 achievements can be blatantly ripped off, like accumulated kills, total victories and the "killing spree" award.
And yes, achievements do fit into 40k. The whole status thing within the SM reflect this, with purity seals, veteran status, restricted equipment etc.

Realised i had made of comment on this one outside of the IRC chat.
Capping, kills and the like should not earn rewards, although from now on ill refer to them as "Imperial honours", since as noted you do that for instant gratification and game winning.
Special Kills (as chrome noted, especially the ChainSword ones) should provide something neat, although numbers would have to be a lot higher for some if its there primary weapon there using. The lictor is a main one here as it in the right hands can easily make that kill total.
Now for the bit i suggest, and if your a dev team member you will have heard me gibber about it before.
Imperial Honours are visable on your player model, so if you earn purity seals, they show up on your player model as purity seals. Awards could be Team Specific so you would have "Imperial Honours" and "Battle Scars".
Examples:
Purity Seals as mentioned - play one class only for a set number of rounds, awarded for each class. Actual Purity Seals appear on your shoulder pad.
Warrior Of the Hive Mind - Play as one class only for a set number of rounds, awarded for each class. Scarring appears on the tyranid, chipped armour plates and more ragged talons.
I think they should be visual only and confer no in-game bonus other than "damn how cool do i look". Eventually if you tagged em all you would look like a tough vetern of many battles.

It is a very good idea for the achievmenements to be visible on the models. You suggest that achievements should be only visible on the player model and nowhere else. Why not. But wouldn't it be nice for the achievements to appears also on the player's profile or something like that?
Anyway, i like the idea of achievements, even if it appears only on models. It will add a "cool" dimension to the game. So when you'll see a veteran-looking marine, you'll be like "this guy must have pretty awesome skills".
I also agree that achievements should not improve your character's abilities. Otherwise it will become something like an hybrid fps/rpg game : you'll fullfill achievements and your character will get better in-game. I don't think it is the goal of the dev team to add such a rpg orientation to the mod.
Anyway guys, you're doing great job and we trust you, you'll make a good mod.

At no point did i say that, i said they should be visable on player models, I NEVER said they should not be in a profile somewhere.

Showing up in player profile is not a bonus, it's still just a visual.
And it would be nice to be able to "brag" about your achievements like that.

Visual only, take it in context of the entire paragraph, im clearly talking about in game and making the Vet players look like "vets"
Back back to the point, the other option is the creation of things youy can buy to enhance your player.
So instead fo them being achevements (ala x-box) you buy a upgrade and they have a like codex effect.
Purity Seals, confer a boost to movement. Toxin Sacks, Add toxic damage to your attacks.
You would pay for them out of your earned points. Although the danger with this is that the better players could concevably keep getting better over the time of a round.
