By default Exterminatus (EX) features space marines from the Bloodravens chapter.  Chapter packs allow you to customize your EX to feature the chapter of your choice instead of the Bloodravens.

Exterminatus has had chapter packs before (you can find them on the downloads page), but they were only built for the EX Beta, scattered files all over your EX install and were missing skins for new classes an some weapons.

This new Ultramarines skin pack is the first of a new set of skin packs, to take advantage of better support in Source 2013 for customization and all the new classes and wargear in EX.

Installation
  • Locate your "ex" folder, this will usually be C:\program Files\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\ , but can vary depending on your Steam installation.
  • If you already have an "ex/custom" folder delete any chapter pack folders inside it.  You can only install one chapter pack at a time.
  • Extract the "custom" folder from the zip file inside your "ex" folder.

These packs work for alpha or beta versions of ex, just replace the "ex" folder name with "ex_alpha" in the instructions above.

If you would like to assist with updating chapter packs for the other space marine chapters, bellow is a link to download the source files and instructions necessary to make your own chapter pack.

If you've decided to make a skin pack for a well known chapter it's probably worth dropping in to the Discord and asking if anyone else is working on the same chapter.  When you're done making your skin pack feel free to get in-touch via leader@40ksource.com so I can tell everyone here on 40ksource.com.

Alpha 9.06 adds polish to the scout weaponry and the trench warfare map.  Work continues on improving game balance.

The ModDB mirrors unlock at 12:00 GMT, if it's busy or not working the installer can be downloaded from 40ksource.com.  Please try the ModDB first.

Install the Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer
  • Navigate to the "Tools" section on your Steam games "Library"
  • Install the "Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer"
  • Run the Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer at least once.
  • You can exit once the menu has finished loading.

Install the latest Exterminatus Alpha
  • If you already have EX alpha, delete it.
  • Run the alpha installer and follow it's instructions.
  • Restart Steam.  You should now see the Exterminatus Alpha listed in your library.

Alpha 9.06 Features
  • Added scout hands to all weapon view models used by the scout class (shotgun, sniper, boltgun, boltpistol, knife and frag grenades).

The original first person knife animations could not be salvaged to work with the scout hands, so entirely new knife animations had to be created.

Balance
  • Nerfed plasma bolt speed from 5600 to 3500 (fixes a plasmagun accuracy bug in 9.05).
  • Nerfed shotgun damage from 108 to 35 per blast.
  • Buffed shotgun from 3 to 8 shots per reload.
  • New server variable ex_shotgun_dmg  to set the damage across all pellets in a blast.  Default 35.
  • New server variable ex_shotgun_pellets to set the number of number of pellets in a blast.   Was 12, now defaults to 10.

Tweaks
  • Doubled the influence of player stance on weapon spread and included strafing as an increased spread factor.
  • Added a client-side notification to the Sniper rifle to report the effect of player stance on weapon spread to assist with additional tuning of the stance and sniper rifle.
  • Shell_spots (as used on csm_trench) wander around a bit between shots, while saying near their authored location.
  • Added missile impact effects to shell_spots so they are more visible (tell me if these get confused with real missile impacts).
  • Added more sound effects, lights and fixed some player clipping issues in csm_trench.
  • Use the zoom crosshair/HUD for the sniper rifle scope.
  • Aligned vote and capture notices to account for the size of icons added in an earlier build.
  • Reverted the plasmagun trigger changes from 9.05.

Future Plans
Additional balance tweaking builds are likely as are additional abilities for the Scout class.  Imperial chapter packs will also be updated to include scout skins and chapter specific battle cries.

Alpha 9.02 adds a new wargear set to the imperial scout, a sniper rifle.  Improvements to the scout's animations for wargear introduced in Alpha 9.01.  Balance tweaks to the scout's shotgun and the Meltagun.

Sorry this version has taken so long to deliver, a combination of flu and time-consuming player animations made it run long.

Install the Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer
  • Navigate to the "Tools" section on your Steam games "Library"

  • Granted the Meltagun back to the Specialist classes.

FYI the Meltagun changes are made a Clay_more's suggestion.  Direct your criticism to him.

Bug Fixes

  • Map vote notifications show how many votes the map has.
  • Updated csm_trench to use shell spots and new shell props.

Bug Fixes

  • Selecting the team you're on from the Team menu shows the class menu, but only if you're already
    dead.

Future Plans

Beta 9 completes the introduction of the Black Legion of Chaos Space Marines (CSM) to Exterminatus (EX).  Now in addition to the Imperial and Tyranid factions you can play as one of the seven CSM classes, with their own chaotic weaponry on one of the five new chaos versus imperial maps.

Installation instructions
  • Install the "Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer" to your steam library (it's listed under "tools").
  • Run the Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer at least once.  You can exit once the menu has finished loading.
  • If you already have a copy of the EX Beta, delete it.
  • Run the Beta installer and follow it's instructions.
  • Restart Steam.  You should now see both the Exterminatus Beta 9 listed in your library.

What's new since 8.70?
The previous big release 8.70 saw the introduction of the chaos classes, but they were somewhat rough around the edges and still using weapons from the imperial loyalists.  Since then the CSM player models and skins have been improved, chaos version of all the weapons have been added, including a unique hand-flamer and dual chain fists for the chaos dreadnaught.

Chaos forces can now balttle it out on 3 completely new maps csm_trench by ChromeAngel, ex_bunker and ex_compromised by WhiteLightningTwister , plus classic EX maps Orbital and Thunderhawk have received overhauls with new chaotic versions and three entirely new chaos maps have been added.

A full record of all the changes since 8.70 can be found on ModDB.

What's next for EX?
Wikkyd and Clay_More have contributed most of the assets required to add a space marine scout to EX. The scout class is planned to be inexpensive in the early game, with access to a much more costly sniper rifle in the late game. Once the scout is in-game a kit for creating custom chapter skins packs will be released before we move on to updating the existing chapter packs.

For over a decade now EX has been released as work in progress Alpha versions, with the occasional release of a stable Beta version showcasing major new features.  Having made contact with Warhammer 40K's owner, Games Workshop and confirming they are satisfied with our use of their property, it's nearly time to take EX out of Beta.

With all the chapters supporting scouts the next major release will be version 1.0 of Exterminatus (no longer Alpha or Beta).

Beta 9 - Release Candidate 3, features a new chaotic, version of the Orbital space station map and yet another updated version of csm_trench.

This is a Beta release that rolls up all the changes since the previous roll up back in July.  As such their is no patch available this week, just the installer and a 7Zip archive of the full mod.  It also installs to the "ex" folder, rather than "ex_alpha"

The ModDB mirrors unlock at 17:00 GMT, if it's busy or not working the installer can be downloaded from 40ksource.com.

Install the latest Exterminatus Release Candidate
  • If you already have a copy of the EX beta, delete it.
  • Run the installer and follow it's instructions.
  • Restart Steam.  You should now see both the Exterminatus Beta release canidate listed in your library.

BarTwoOne has taken the time to produce a second tutorial video going into some details of the EX movement system can be used.

Since CSM won't be getting any more classes for a while and their is a clamour for more legion skins i've decided to release a package to help players make their own custom CSM skins right now.  If you're interested in trying this please Download the CSM skin templates (92.4mb) and follow the readme.txt inside.

Features
  • New map csm_orbital by DontAsk4470, based on Nic2's original ex_orbital.
  • New textures by DontAsk4470 as seen in csm_orbital.

Tweaks
  • Enabled the use of custom skins.

Future Plans
Depending on how testing of this release candidate goes we may go ahead and release Beta 9 next weekend.  Any screenshots, demos or videos of recent EX games you have could help promote Beta 9, please get in touch and share them with me.

The plan is still to move on to work on the space marine scout once Beta 9 has been released.  Then release PSD templates of chapter skins to allow players to make their own chpater packs.  Hopefully the ability to make DIY skin packs will see new skins faster then waiting for me to get around to it.  I'll then update all the existing marine chapter packs support the scout and the chapter specific battlecries Bulwark has already recorded.  Adding a new playable class will mean that game balance will almost certainly need testing and tuning.

Once all that is done I look forward to taking EX out of Beta and making public the version 1.0 release.

Beta 9 - Release Candidate 2, features the return of an updated csm_trench, an overhaul of ex_lycantium and attempts to address the sound issues that occurred in release candidate 1.  It was that sound glitch that really didn't give me the confidence to release the first candidate in time for Christmas.

Tweaks

  • Added more scenery, details and effects to csm_trench.
  • ex_lycantium has received and overhaul by DontAsk4470, making it a night map.

Bug Fix
  • Included pre-built sound cache to address the audio issues in RC 1.

Future Plans
