Alpha 8.44 features new Venom Cannon wargear for tyranid warriors, a small buff for the biovore and bug fixes for the lictor or objective indicators.

The ModDB mirrors unlock at 13:00 GMT, if it's busy or not working the installer can be downloaded from 40ksource.com.  Please try the ModDB first.

Install the Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer
  • Navigate to the "Tools" section on your Steam games "Library"
  • Install the "Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer"
  • Run the Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer at least once.
  • You can exit once the menu has finished loading.

Install the latest Exterminatus Alpha
  • If you already have a copy of the EX alpha, delete it.
  • Run the alpha installer and follow it's instructions.
  • Restart Steam.  You should now see both the Exterminatus Beta 8.38 and Exterminatus Alpha listed in your library.

Features
  • New venom cannon wargear for the warrior class, priced at 75 points.  It has 40% less range, splash size and damage than the carnifex version, but fires 40% faster too.  This involves new weapon models and new warrior animations. CC requested.

Balance
  • Buffed the spore mines rate of fire from 1.2 seconds per shot to 0.8.
  • Nerfed the spore mine's damage from 50 to 40.

Bug fixes
  • Attempted to fix the HUD occasionally not highlighting the correct target objective.  I don't know how to reporduce the old bug, but we should know soon enough if this fix has made it any worse.
  • Attempted to fix the lictor cloak.

Next week i'll be tuning the new weapon combo, making turrets play idle sounds and working on an offline tutorial level for new players.  I'm still looking for an artist to create 40k themed stained glass designed for EX's windows.

More work to improve the look, sound and general atmosphere of the maps is planned for next week.  I am also starting to think about the implementation of the planned new tyranid wargear.

If you've got the art skills we'd love to have some 40k themed stained glass in the levels.  Drop me a line to leader@40ksource.com if you're interested.

This patch ticks off one of the items on the plan for the next beta and attempts to resolve the last of the known  issues caused by porting to the latest engine version.  Maps, tutorials and new tyranid weapon variations still wait to be addressed.

The changes in Alpha 8.41 are mostly corrections of issues that arose due to migration the code to a newer version, including a case that actually crashes the game server.

The ModDB mirrors unlock at 12:00 GMT, if it's busy or not working the installer can be downloaded from 40ksource.com.

Bug fixes
  • Server crash (related to spawn protection).
  • The message "Player %s1 joined team %s2" was missing the name of the player (%s1)..
  • Notification of deaths were misaligned and cut up.
  • Red tint when injured is back (it was deliberately removed in earlier EX versions
  • Flamer spots (where the world was lit) making burning sounds even after the fire has gone out.
  • bolter impacts don't sound like they come from the point of impact.
  • Dreadnaught battle cry was absent.

Known issue
  • Tarsis Ultra is missing an overview map for the loading screen.
  • Lictor cloak is 100% effective when fully cloaked, pretty sure it remained at about 3% visible previously.
  • Odd shader issues I was unable to reproduce.

Last week I announced my plan for the next phase of Exterminatus development.   The first item in that plan was to port the EX code to the latest Source 2013 Beta_test code base in readiness of it's eventual public release.  This week Valve released that update, making the current EX beta unplayable without all players and servers downgrading to the previous version.

I have managed to get a new build of EX working with the new version of Source 2013, which is the main reason for this weeks Alpha release.

The ModDB mirrors unlock at 22:00 BST (GMT+1), if it's busy or not working the installer can be downloaded from 40ksource.com.

You should now see both the Exterminatus Beta 8.28 and Exterminatus Alpha listed in your library.

According to the Source 2013 news post it's main features are:
  • Fixed potential security issues.
  • Fixed a case where changelevel2 would print a map not found error and fail to function in SDK2013 modss.
  • Fixed an exploit that could be used to crash dedicated servers.

Now i've had to port over every scrap of EX code into the new code base in a very short time.  Every single EX feature needs testing in this Alpha, all the classes, all the weapons, all the menus, all the maps.  I've tested as much as I can solo, but there is a lot of this game that only happens in multiplayer.

Features
  • Compatibility with the latest version of Source 2013 Multiplayer.

Balance
  • Marine players now score points for killing off Barbed Stranger projectiles.  This is to discourage prolonged BS ambushes, where the marines cannot counter attack their ambusher.

Known issue
  • Class hints are back and sometimes the background box stays on-screen.

The priority for EX development will be to fix any issues that this new version before continuing with the plan I laid out on the 8th of may to get EX on the Steam Store.

Firstly, apologies for the long delay since the last update , but IRL i've been really busy with serious and unavoidable responsibilities.

There has been many requests from players for an app to make EX self update, to help them keep up with the mod's frequent releases and we'd all like to see more players on the EX servers. The obvious way to do both of these would be to get EX on the Steam store, since we're all using Steam to run EX anyway. Some players have asked why I haven't put EX on Steam Greenlight (an addition to the Steam store that lets Steam's customers vote on which games they want to see in the Store).

Way back in the day, when the Ultramarine movie and Spacemarine game were still in development and Greenlight didn't exist yet. I went through the manual process to try and get EX on the Steam store as a free mod. I was upfront with Valve about using Games Workshop (GW)'s Intellectual Property (IP) and even linked them to GW's terms of use (which were very strict at the time). EX was refused inclusion in the store with the phrase "Steam is not fit for distribution".

Anyway, the wheel has turned. Valve has automated their submission process with Greenlight and GW is taking a more relaxed position with their IP. So, it's time to try again.

In order to give us the best chance of being accepted this time there are a few things I think we should be doing to prepare:

  • Port the EX code to the latest Source 2013 Beta_test code base in readiness of it's eventual public release. This is fiddly and time consuming, with no visible results, but it does protect EX from suddenly stopping working when Valve switch over the live Source SDK version.
  • Create a new Offline Tutorial map to introduce new players to EX.
  • Continue to improve the lighting and detailing of the maps, to make them bolder and more polished.
  • Create a Venom Cannon war-gear set for the tyranid warrior priced in the 75pt category..
  • Create a Dual-wielded Devourers war-gear set for the Carnifex to be priced the same as the Screamer Killer.
  • Give marines points for killing barbed strangler projectiles.
  • Create a Vox menu that doesn't block gameplay.
  • Seek GW's permission to put EX on Steam Greenlight as a free mod.

If we can get EX on Steam we can reach a lot more players. Maybe even enough players to keep the servers populated around the clock, so you can just drop in and play a round, without having to schedule play times. More players will likely attract more contributors who can help make the mod even better or even add those other races we all want to see in EX. Plus of course we would have the benefits of updating via Steam, rather than having to re-install and patch all the time.

This process is not without some risk. GW and Valve are making money from the paid for games using the 40k IP and Steam Store, they may see EX as competition for those paid games. That could cause EX to be rejected by them or at worst Cease and Desisted (as other 40k mods have been in the past). I've been straight with everyone, played by the rules, so i'm willing to gamble the last twelve years work on EX with this move. It's in the players interest to make it easier to play EX, it's in Valve's interest to have another game using their Source Engine and it's in GW's interest to have fans like us creating content for 40k.

Here is a summary of the changes to Exteminatus - Rival Species 2 since since it's last beta (version 8.21). This article will not contain any surprises to those who have been following the alpha builds, but might be of use to less frequent readers.

Features
New Dreadnaught player class.
The imperial team have a new, very expensive,  very tough to kill in the Dreadnaught (Dread).  The player model was made by Stormwolf597, Wikkyd and ChromeAngel and skinned by ChromeAngel and Dontask4470.  Sound effects for the Dread were created and supplied by DontAsk4470 and Plague Marine Champion.

Dreadnaughts are equipped with a Flamer and Siege drill weapon combo. The flamer doesn't use conventional ammo, but can overheat.  Dreads can also launch smoke grenades using the Reload key. Smoke grenades are limited to 3 per spawn.  The smoke grenades particle effect was created and tuned by DontAsk4470.  The Dread's weapon combo model was created by Stormwolf597, Wikkyd and ChromeAngel.

Assault Specialists
The melta gun wargear set has been moved from the specialist class to the assault marine, this set is known as the Assault Specialist.  The melta requires more points on top of the assault marine, but enables them to do some serious damage.  making both class and weaon more effective than their earlier incarnations.

Devourer Warriors
The Tyranid warrior has a new wargear set featuring the Devourer weapon symbiote.  Model, texture and code were all created by ChromeAngel.  The Devourer's tracer and impact particle effects and firing sound effects were made by DontAsk4470.

Barbed Strangler Warriors
The Tyranid warrior has a second new wargear set featuring the Barbed Strangler (BS) weapon symbiont.  The BS weapon launches a creature that sits in wait and pulls it's victims toward it.  Each weapon can only launch 1 creature at a time.  Reloading the weapon sacrifices the current creature and allows the weapon to fire again.  The Barbed Strangler view model and textures were contributed by Chris Wassum back in 2008 (thanks for your patience Chris!).  The BS firing and impact sound effects were created by DontAsk4470.

BS pulls gradually increasing in strength, pulling it's victims faster.  Damage to BS victims increases the longer a victim is held, crushing even terminators in time.   The BS pulls terminators and dreadnaughts less than other marines, due to their weight.  The BS pulls vertically at 1% strength.  BS barbs snap when they reach their maximum range.  The BS is priced compariably to the Lictor, Zoanthrope and Biovore, due to many of these effects.

Anti-Cheat
Exterminatus now works with the sv_pure server setting to reduce the possibilities for cheating.  This has been made compatible with the skin packs system, so you can still use your favourite chapter packs which have now been updated to include new skins for the new Dreadnaught class.

Tweaks
  • Wargear system has been modified to allow for kits of different points cost on the same class.
  • Player class system has been modified to handle player sound (such as battle cries and footsteps) differently.
  • Wargear options that are too expensive should be dimmed out.
  • Cancelling the wargear menu shows the class menu.
  • Cancelling the class menu shows the team menu (may be modified by autoblance settings).
  • Grenade tracers are now red.
  • All the "Letterbox" style menus have been slimmed down, to allow more icons across the screen.
  • Class and wargear menus show your points in the top right (for comparison to costs), this should help you gauge if you can afford that venomfex before you choose it.
  • Class menu details now includes the number of players using the highlighted class (so you don't end up with 5 medics).
  • Class and Wargear is purchased at spawn time, so you can go back through the menus.
  • Improved Plasmagun, Deathspitter and Sporemine trail effects from DontAsk4470.
  • New boltpistol shot sound effect from DontAsk4470.
  • Tweaked the warrior texture around the top of the arms.
  • Flames set by the flamer make a burning noise.
  • Lycantium has been updated adding a new route between the Monument and Courtyard objectives.
  • Re-lit the City Conflict map under the guidance of DontAsk4470 and moved the landing pad/generators to make them slightly easier to capture.
  • Re-lit ex_hive to use more saturated lighting and changes to protect the marine start turret and enable free movement.
  • Tweaked Lycantium to block the dome shortcut until the Monument objective had been captured.  Added some lighting effects to light sources.

Bug Fixes
  • Fixed flamers pushing their targets back.
  • Fixed shortcut keys now work in the map vote menu.
  • Fixed glitches releated to Biovore ammo consumption.  Mines now use as much ammo as shots that explode on impact.  The biovore will no longer go into negative ammo.
  • Fixed some "missing" sounds.

Balance
  • Reduced Flamer cost  to reflect that it no longer pushes back it's victims.
  • Buffed Flamer damage from 24 to 30.
  • Reduced Meltagun cost from 50 to 25 points.
  • Reduced Carnifex cost from 150 to 125 points.
  • Increased Venom Cannon cost from 0 to 50 points.

Every ten alpha releases I aim to produce a Beta release of EX, a stable build that players who don't want to put up with the oddities that crop up in alpha testing can play.  Release Candidate 8.38 may be the next of these stable builds.  A few things needed smoothing out in the previous candidate, i'm hoping this version will fare better.

The ModDB mirrors unlock at 13:00 GMT, if it's busy or not working the installer can be downloaded from 40ksource.com or the zip file.

Install the latest Exterminatus Release Candidate
  • If you already have a copy of the EX, delete it.
  • Run the installer and follow it's instructions.
  • Restart Steam.  You should now see both the Exterminatus Beta 8.37 listed in your library.

As the title suggests i'm thinking of releasing a new EX Beta shortly, so it's vitally important I have reports of any outstanding balance issue or bugs, so I can try and fix them before the Beta.  Please report any bug on the EX steam discussion group ( Bugs or similarly on the topic of Balance ).  Releasing a Beta means doing some extra publicity work for me.  If you have any cool videos or screen shots of recent EX builds please let me know as I can always use more material to promote EX.

The chapter skin packs for the Space Wolves and White Scars chapters have been updated to include skins for the new Dreadnaught class.

Tweaks
  • More lighting tweaks to ex_hive's team start areas, to protect the turret and enable free movement.
  • BS barbs now snap when they reach their maximum range and shake their victms less, but do slightly more damege.
  • Tweaked Lycantium to block the dome shortcut until the Monument objective had been captured.  Added some lighting effects to light sources.
