Lately throughout the past few months hammer has been giving mappers a hard time, including me.

Anybody else have the problem?

This goes for most source mods including ex. I'm talking about the part where colors are wrong, no grids and the selection red stuff doesn't show up.

Yes, it's been glitchy for me too.  Apparently it's DirectX 9 that's the problem.  You're supposed to be able to start it with the following parameter to for it to use DirectX 8 instead:

Code:
-dxlevel 80

It didn't work for me when I used it on the SDK launcher, you might have to find and launch the hammer.exe directly.

Didn't work for me either when I put it in set launch options. Ima see if I can get a version of direct x 8 then.

DX9 and later are backwardly compatible with DX8, this just tells the app to only use features from DX8 and earlier.

I just tried making a shortcut to the hammer.exe file ($SteamUserDir\sourcesdk\bin\orangebox\bin\hammer.exe) and adding the startup parameter to the command line.  It seems to be working.

A couple of oddities:
  • models in the planer viewers are showing the checker texture rather than wireframe
  • transparent models are showing all black

but aside from that it all looks great.

Hammer Time!

Just to add to the issues, currently launching Hammer gives me the error:

"the config information for the game is invalid or missing"

Atemtping to run anyway results in "gameinfo.txt is missing" followed by it crahsing out.

Scratch that, it just started working for Ex of its own accord, does not work for any of the main game,s but its ok with Ex now (appart from the graphical glitches already noted).

When the hell will Valve just leave what works alone!

Yea its like, ITS OUR 101ST WORTHLESS STUPID UPDATE OMG!

When they update its mostly worthless, some are good like changing things around like the new css achievements.

Yeh,. you would think they would test this stuff before throwiong it out.

My hammer is now totally useless, either the backgroumnds vanish and i cant see the plans and elevations to map with or it crashes at random intervals making working on anything near impossable.

Great.

Source SDK got a update today, its now half-working on my machine. The only major issue seams to be that the plans and elevations with grid overlay go black if i move anything within them.

Still it means work can begin again.

OK, we have a workaround that gets hammer working again:
  • backup your SourceMods/ex/GameInfo.txt
  • open GameInfo.txt in notepad
  • change the 218 in the SteamAppId line to 440

Apparently Valve just HATE mods.  This tells the SDK that EX is based on TeamFortress2 (which it will let you map for) rather than the Source SDK Base.  You'll probably need to restore your backup of gameinfo.txt to play EX, but this should enable us to get mapping again.
