I would have to go with orks, because you just don't see SMs in those kinds of encounters often besides the battle of McCragge, so it should be orks, since they would be more similar to an SM, and would have a equal chance of killing each other, Termagants could just be crushed by an Ultramarine's boot

Yeah people vs bugs about 80% the peopls win because they have airplanes, tanks, guns. While the "bugs or nids" just have claws, though they are the kings of close range they will always be non effective long ranged. But if they have a effective long range weapons...well...thats not a bug Cheesy

If nids do go into RS2 than they better be uber bad asses like the Onos in Natural Selection. But better like an Onos on drugs, huge arms, thick thick skin, incredible speed, able to eat the marines ever faster.
But with Orks they have guns, tanks, etc. along with the SM.

on the other side orcs only would have a shabby armour which would basically mean that i guess every 3-4th boltershot would be capable of take out an orc.
its difficult to satisfy every fractions... the hardcore players want equal teams where each one has the chance to kill the other but the one with better reflexes wins... (quake, cs etc...).
While fluff fans want that 1 holy warrior of the emperor should be capable of taking out at least 5 incoming orcs with his bolters and then take at least 3 out in close combat... omg just think of 1 single terminator who could take out the whole waaaagh

personally, i think if it goes like imperials vs orcs the imperials should be mainly guards and not space "uber" marines Cheesy
at least in player vs player
guards have better firepower but will lose if orcs get in close combat.
nids would have incredible close combat and high speed and i think at least good firepower which would make them much stronger than orcs...

im not a fluff person, but i do generally think that a SM v AI Nids wud be fun, not coz the 40k books say a SM cud take on an army but bcoz i think having a strong AI v a group of players wud be fun to create teamwork, it cud work clan wise, the clan amtch wud be the 2 clans split up on the map and do things there own way, the survivor ior the team who does the opbjective wins, not the same as PvP but its ok
ps. fluff is BS

I say we balance the game after the actual board game.
There are enough "all players equal"-games out there already.

IF we took orks, I'd say Space Marines should be about twice as strong as orks, that means superior in ranged combat and about equal in close.
But the orks should have a fast respawn rate, and perhaps AI backup.

For balancing 'Nids, I'd say most of the team gets some specie that is infernior to a SM, but a few gets a Terminator-trashing über creature (Tyrant, Carnifex).
See other tread on how to decide who gets the strong creature.

this is one of the frustrating things with RS on hl1, it got too anoying when you have to die 2 or 3 times just to kill one of the opposition, and it is quite significant if there are objectives to complete like CTF for example.  Both teams set out, say 8 a side, the marines wipe out the opposition on the way there, and again when they get there, then there is no catching them.

also it requires a different system to try and balance them, like giving them more spawns, but again in RS1 it didnt seem to work too well.  IMO the everything has a chance to kill anything else works quite well, we just need to play around with things untill it works right

Forgive me for not just accepting the easy solution...

But I just think that having the freedom to do (almost) anything with the mod, we really should try to think out of the box.

New suggestion: Having different number of players on each team. Auto-team balance needs to be on, and balance to 2 orks for each SM. Some will whine when they can't choose their favorite team, but one team is usually filled anyway, at least in NS.
And I don't mind dying often. Being a long time Unreal Tournament player, I often have both the higest frag AND death rate.

But anyway, it seems like Tyranids win, so Orks are really irrellevant. I think the best way to balance SM vs. 'Nids are to have lots of NPC Nid critters, then having the players controlling the larger creatures, that still are a bit weaker than the marines.
Then we got the feeling that SM are superior warriors (killing loads of lesser 'Nids), and that Tyranids are superior in numbers. And Nid players do have the opportunity to have a 1/1 death/frag rate, as Space Marines will often be injuried by the swarm.

thats not exactly the synapse mode, the nid team gets more players but its in proportion to the space marines in the game.

Something like 3:1 with limitations on the type of brood you can spawn if the no of space marines is lower than this. A full write up of how its proposed to work will be shown alongside another pile of version based on other play styles on the 1st after the poll closes.
