i dont think that it would be any more distracting than a numeric counter runnning down.
althogh i wonder how easy it would be to read, perhaps a small animated test would be in order to see how it works, in flash perhaps.

Hmm i don't think so it would take some time to adjust too like every hud, but would create a new angle for the tyranids
