Who said it was 1 squad? and who said it was a full Nid swarm? could be a few survivors being mopped up.

Actually, Space Marines are almost exclusivly employed as strike-teams, making needle assaults against critical enemy installations, like an enemy HQ or ammunition deposit.
So a small team of SM could be deployed in the middle of a war, to take the objective in a hurry, and they would only encounter so many enemy troops, because they fight for an objective rather than just to kill the enemy.
