After more than a decade in development we have finally decided to drop the "Beta" label from major releases. Today's "full" version is the first major release out of beta. This full version features a new scout class, scouting mechanic, faster boltguns, balance improvements and bug fixes.

The Scout
The major feature of Beta 9 is the Spacemarine Scout whose player model was contributed by Wikkyd and textured by ChromeAngel.  The scout is a first tier class, available form the start of each round and has only 90 health, in comparison to most marines 110. The scout makes up for it's low health by having higher speed than the tactical marine, being as fast as a veteran or assult marine.

The Scout has 3 wargear sets:
The Scout's Shotgun set is available for free.  The shotgun model was contributed by Clay_more and textured by ChromeAngel, it's sound effects were contributed by DontAsk4470.  The Shotgun holds 8 shells, which need to be individually loaded.  Each shot fires 10 pellets, which will do 46 damage if they all hit.  Secondary attack of the shotgun can be used to tag enemies for targeting by team mates at ranges up to 3012 units to earn more points.  The scout will announce the type of target, thanks to Bulkwark for voicing this addiontal scout dialogue and Dontask4470 for editing it.  The shotgun wargear set also includes a knife, frag grenades and a bolt pistol that work like their space marine counterparts.

The second scout wargear set is the boltgun set, which swaps out the shotgun for standard space marine boltgun for an extra 5 points.

The third set if scout wargeat is the Sniper Rifle set. The Sniper Rifle model was also contributed by Clay_more and textured by ChromeAngel with sound effects by DontAsk4470.  Secondary fire toggles the scope and slows the scout's movement.  Sniper rifle cost 25 points and do 50 points of damage per shot (as much as the far more expensive heavy bolter), however the sniper only gets 4 shots per magazine, so he has to choose his targets with more care.  Sniper rifles are slow to cycle taking 1.5 seconds per shot and 3 seconds to reload that magazine.  Stance greatly effects the accuracy of the sniper rifle, however it can be dead accurate by firing from a static crouched position.

The scouting system has been retrofitted to the secondary attack of the Genestealer's claws, so they can scout for the hive-mind, adding more depth and a use for the genestealer at range.

More Features
New prop models for live and fired Earthshaker shells.
New HUD icons for map votes and objective captures.

The following console variables were added for balance tuning the server: ex_csword_rof,
ex_caxe_rof, ex_caxe_dmg, ex_bolter_range, ex_bolter_actual_rof, ex_bolter_kick1,
ex_bolter_kick, ex_shotgun_dmg, ex_shotgun_pellets

Mapping
A new map entity ex_shell_spot (as used on csm_trench) which detect nearby players then
call in a artillery fire on their position (with sound effects, vibration and particles of
fire, dirt and smoke).  Shell spots wander around a bit between shots, while saying near
their authored location.

Outputs have been added to the ex_gameplay entity to register kills made by players on each of the teams.
This should allow development of more Team Dealthmatch style maps.
We  have also added to the ex_gameplay entity options for mappers to freeze the spawn locations used by teams.
Ammo shrines can now be configured to dispense ammo for free (for use in the lab maps).

csm_trench has been updated to use shell spots and new shell props, added more sound effects,
lights and fixed some player clipping issues in csm_trench.

Moved the garage objective in ex_bunker to a position where I hope it will be easier to
capture (but not too easy) to  prevent further 1st objective stalemates.  Turned all
ex_bunker dropzones to face the entrance to their spawn room.

Balance
Boltguns are faster with less recoil and more magazine but weaker to balance them out.
Reduced bolter kick from 0.8 to 0.63.

Player stance now effects spread and weapon kick.  Running and jumping increase the spread
of shots, while standing still and crouching decrease the spread.  If you want to be accurate with the new bolter it is important that yout not be charging about and pogoing while firing.

Imperial Balance Changes
Bolt Pistol combos either shoot or melee attack, you can no-longer do both at once.

Reduced the cost of flamer specialists to 50 points.

Granted the Meltagun back to the Specialist classes at a cost of 75 points.
Buffed Meltagun range from 700 to 900.
Nerfed Meltagun "clip" size from 30 to 20
Buffed Meltagun rate of fire from 0.2s to 0.1s per shot.
Nerfed Meltagun damage per shot from 12 to 8 per hit.  Which should kill a terminator at
arms reach with one full tank.
Nerfed  Dreadnaught armour resistance to Melta attacks.

Reduced the cost of plasma specialists to 105 points.
Nerfed Plasma bolt size from 8x8 to 6x6 (4x4 for pistols)
Nerfed plasma bolt speed from 4000 to 3500 (fixes a plasmagun accuracy bug).

Chaos Balance Changes
Chain axes are now slower, but more damaging than Chainswords.
Nerfed Dreadnaught armour resistance to Melta attacks.

Tyranid Balance Changes
Nerfed tyranid weapon combos so they cannot use both attacks at the same time.

Nerfed the tyranid warriors ability to absorb weapon recoil, so stance will have a greater effect on their accuracy.

Buffed Devourer ammo regeneration rate from 0.75 to 0.5 seconds per shot (both warrior and fex versions).
Nerfed Warrior Devourer damage from 26 per shot to 23 per shot. to give the same DPS as the shotgun.
Nerfed Warrior Devourer range from 3000 to 1000 units to match the shotgun.
Tweaked the Warrior Devourer to fire 5 pellets per shot (4 damage per pellet).  Making it easier to hit, but less effective against armour.

Buffed Warrior Venom Cannon range and damage by 40%.

Nerfed the Barbed Stangler's accuracy from 4 degrees spread to 40 degrees.

Reduced Carnifex class cost from 250 to 175 points.
Nerfed Carnifex armour so that boltguns can hurt it again.
Decreased Carnifex Screamer Killer wargear cost to 0 points.
Increased Carnifex Devouer wargear cost from 50 to 100 points.
Increased Carnifex Venomcannon wargear cost from 175 to 250 points.

Buffed Biovore spore mine launcher by reducing the spread from 15 degrees to 5 degrees.
Deployed sporemines now home in on players that have been scouted by Genestealers.

Tweaks
Map vote menu shows how many votes each map has received.
Reduced the subset of options in the map vote menu to a more manageable number.
Map vote notifications show how many votes the map has.

Tweaked imperial space marine, Terminator, Specialist and Assault marine hit boxes to bring them in-line with the CSM hitboxes.

New helmet style for the veteran class (related to IMP texture pack work).

Primary/default weapons are now in slot 1, except for the Narcathium.
Frag Grenades are now in slot 2.
Knives and Narcathium are now in slot 3.
The solo bolt pistol is now in slot 4.

Remove the powerfield effect from the spacemarine powerfist to try and avoid a crash.

Bug Fixes
Cancelling the wargear menu returns you to the class selection menu.
Selecting the team you're on from the Team menu shows the Class menu, but only if you're already dead.

Fixed a crash bug with the Chaos Dreadnaught (actually related to hints for new classes)
Fixed a crash bug relating to notices about objective captures and map votes.
Fixed the chaos havoc crouching with a heavy bolter animation, so he does not appear to levitate.

Future Plans
Out of beta. So, is this it? Is its done? Is this the final version of EX?

Nope.

Since we started work on this release the excellent modeller and texture artist Joazzz has joined the EX community and pledged to make all new spacemarine models from scratch. A monster undertaking.  Here are just a few of things he's been working on:

Joazzz did not come alone either, he brought two of his mates with him. Kharos and Warekit are both Source Film Maker animators and have offered to animate all the new models that are being added. This is the first time in the long history of the mod that we have dedicated animators working on EX (you can tell, I know).

Minor versions of EX will continue to be referred to as "Alphas". With all these contributors and more there will be plenty of Alphas to come.

This week's download is the seconds Release Candidate for the full version of Exterminatus, which will replace the previous Beta version.  Release Candidate 2 (RC2) enables custom chaos legion skins, improves balance between CSM and LSM and fixes a bug with the default map cycle.

Installer RC2 ( 1.35gb )

7Zip Archive RC2 ( 1.35gb )

This is a Beta release that rolls up all the changes since the previous roll up back in January.  As such their is no patch available this week, just the installer and a 7Zip archive of the full mod.  It also installs to the "ex" folder, rather than "ex_alpha"

The ModDB mirrors unlock at 12:00 GMT, if it's busy or not working the installer can be downloaded from 40ksource.com.  Please try the ModDB first.

Install the Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer
  • Navigate to the "Tools" section on your Steam games "Library"
  • Install the "Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer"
  • Run the Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer at least once.
  • You can exit once the menu has finished loading.

Install the latest Exterminatus Release Canidate
  • If you already have a copy of the EX Beta, delete it.
  • Run the installer and follow it's instructions.
  • Restart Steam.  You should now see both the Exterminatus Beta release canidate listed in your library.

Tweaks
  • Tweaked the sawbones bolter and chainsword combo to work exactly like it's imperial counterpart.
  • Tweaked the Flamer and Melta code to try and prevent dropped weapons from spewing particle effects.
  • Enabled custom legion skins by default.

Balance
  • Buffed the chaos bolter reload speed to match it's imperial counterpart.

Future Plans
Depending on how testing of this second release candidate goes we may go ahead and release the first full version of Exterminatus in a couple of weeks time.

As usual as this time any assistance with  publicising the mod, either by spreading the word, or supplying me with screenshots, demos or videos of EX can help make the full version release the success it deserves to be.

As well as the new models an animations mentioned last week, DontAsk4470 has been re-working the voice over and White has been doing more work on EX maps.  So there is plenty more content to come, even once the full version arrives.

New Artists
The arrival of 3 new artists on the EX Discord has caused much excitement and drama over the last two weeks.  In-case you missed all the fun here's the low down on the new crew.

Joazzz is highly regarded for his work converting assets from 40k Games such as Spacemarine and Regicide for use in 40k themed SFM renders and versions of this models are popular with the 40k GMod community.  Joazzz has already posted some very exciting teasers of scratch built marine models on the EX Discord server.  You should visit Joazzz Deviant Art page, DevWatch, +Fav his art to show your support.

Kharos and Warekit are both animators who work with Source Film Maker (SFM) to make Warhammer 40k animations.  Kharos has already started work creating new first person animations for the the EX Boltgun.  Warekit has started making animations for EX's 3rd person player models, whcih have been teased in the EX Discord server.  You can visit Kharos and Warekit youtube channels to see some examples of their work and subscribe to show your support.

Future Plans
Depending on how testing of the release candidate goes we may go ahead and release the first full version of Exterminatus in a couple of weeks time.

As usual as this time any assistance with  publicising the mod, either by spreading the word, or supplying me with screensots, demos or videos of EX can help make the full version release the success it deserves to be.

Beyond the full version we are all very excited to see new models and animation from the new contributors, which look to be a step up in fidelity for some core parts of EX.

Alpha 9.12 comes with a feature I wasn't sure was doable without changing every weapon in the game, moving (slowly) while scoped.  OK it's a small patch this week, but it feels like all the bug things have been addressed.

Install the latest Exterminatus Alpha
  • If you already have EX alpha, delete it.
  • Run the alpha installer and follow it's instructions.
  • Restart Steam.  You should now see the Exterminatus Alpha listed in your library.

Features
  • Walking while using the sniper rifle scope.

Tweaks
  • Added a pointing animation to the shotgun view model when using the tracking ability.
  • Tweaked the scout tracker *again* to try and avoid it being visible to the tracked player.
  • Remove ther powerfield effect from the powerfist to try and avoid a crash.

Chapter Pack of the Week - Imperial Fists
New chapter packs continued to prepared for all our favourite chapters.  As with previous packs not all battle cries are replaced, only a couple of new cries are added specific to this chapter.

Just extract the zip file to your ex folder to change your Bloodravens battle bothers to Imperial Fists.
More detailed installation instructions can be found on the EX forum thread on the topic.

Future Plans
All the features I wanted are in and more or less working as intended in 9.12.  There are only two more chapter packs remaining to be revisited the Spacewolves and Whitescars, these should be done within two weeks.  This makes me think the next build I should put out will be a candidate for the big Exterminatus version 1 release.

Unless csm_spacehulk, ex_exchange or _transamitter maps get a lot of development and testing in the next couple of weeks they will be removed from the release candidate.

It is about this time I start thinking about updating the map thumbnails, loading screens, the EX manual and website to bring them up to date with all the new features since beta 9.  If you notice anything on 40ksource.com or in it's manual that needs updating please bring it to my (ChromeAngel's) attention.

  • Fixed a bug that would cause the server to loop if a tagged player was killed.

Future Plans
I anticipate some more alphas before I start working on the Version 1 release.  The scouting mechanic is taking longer to tweak than expected due to the need for multiple players for testing.

Alpha 9.10 features improvements to the new scouting system and bug fixes.  I had not planned on releasing another alpha so soon, but the packaging issues with 9.09 made it necessary.  Plus Salamanders chapter fans get their skin pack sooner.

New chapter packs continued to prepared for all our favourite chapters.  As with previous packs not all battle cries are replaced, only a couple of new cries are added specific to this chapter.

Just extract the zip file to your ex folder to change your Bloodravens battle bothers to Salamanders.
More detailed installation instructions can be found on the EX forum thread on the topic.

Features
  • ex_transmitter a NID VS IMP defence map by WhitelightingTwister in which the marines objective is to defend their transmitter for a fixed time against waves of tyranid attackers.  A very early version to test gameplay with this layout and mechanic.
  • csm_transmitter a chaos version of ex_transmitter.
  • Added the scouting system to the secondary attack of the Genestealers claws, so they can scout for the hivemind.

Tweaks
  • Awarded Scouts and Stealers 5 points per target tagged.  This might need tweaking/removing later to prevent farming.
  • Nerfed (Chaos and Imperial) Dreadnaught armour resistance to Melta attacks.

Bug Fix
  • Fixed missing graphics for the scout icon.
  • Fixed players being tagged with more than one scout tracker at a time.
  • Fixed all players seeing scout trackers, not just the team that placed it.
  • Fixed a bug where vital parts of ex_transmitter and csm_transmitter where missing.

Future Plans
I anticipate some more alphas before I start working on the Version 1 release.  These new maps and scouting mechanic have a lot of potential, but are also pretty raw in this build, so may need a few more Alphas to dial-in.

Double Feature - Chapter Pack of the Week - Dark Angels and Raven Guard
New chapter packs continued to prepared for all our favourite chapters.  Both packs come with chapter specific battle cries.  As with previous packs not all battle cries are replaced, only a couple of new cries are added per chapter.

Just extract the zip file to your ex folder to change your Bloodravens battle bothers to your chosen chapter.
More detailed installation instructions can be found on the EX forum thread on the topic.

The Black Templars skins released with 9.08 have also been updated based on feedback from long standing EX community leader Otakumon.

Alpha 9.09 Features
  • ex_exchange a CSM VS IMP map by WhitelightingTwister (author of ex_compromised and ex_bunker) with 6 objectives across a market port city.  A very early greybox version to test gameplay of this layout.
  • ex_transmitter a NID VS IMP defense map by WhitelightingTwister in which the marines objective is to defend their transmitter for a fixed time against waves of tyranid attackers.  A very early version to test gameplay with this layout and mechanic.
  • csm_transmitter a chaos version of ex_transmitter.
  • Added outputs from the ex_gameplay entity to register kills made by players on the teams. This should allow development of more Team Dealthmatch style maps.
  • A scouting system has added to EX.  The scout can activate this using the secondary attack of the shotgun (replacing the inspection animation).

Using the scouting system a scout can place a tracker on players under his crosshair.   The tracker will appear on the HUD of all his team-mates in the same way that objectives do.  If the target dies or the scout looses sight of the tracker for more then 3 seconds the tracker should expire.  When placing a tracker the scout should also notify his team of what player and class he's spotted.  This includes a voice notification for each targeted class recorded by the excellent Bulwark and edited by DontAsk4470.  Much of this features relies on network code and multiple players and as such needs testing.

In future i'd like to reward the scout for wounds inflicted on targets they are tracking and grant a similar ability to the Genestealer class, but I wanted to make sure it was actually working first.

Balance
  • Reduced bolter kick from 0.8 to 0.7
  • Nerfed the Barbed Stangler's accuracy from 4 degrees spread to 40 degrees.

Bug Fix
  • Fixed a bug in 9.08 where CSM could not throw their grenades.

Future Plans
I anticipate some more alphas before I start working on the Version 1 release.  These new maps and scouting mechanic have a lot of potential, but are also pretty raw in this build, so may need a few more Alphas to dial-in.

More detailed installation instructions can be found on the EX forum thread on the topic.

I tried the Black Templars skins in-game and found it to be a little confusing when fighting the Black legion, with black armour on both sides.  So, you might want to think twice about using these.

Alpha 9.08 Featured Tweaks
  • Nerfed tyranid weapon combos so they cannot use both attacks at the same time.
  • Primary/default weapons are now in slot 1, except for the Narcathium.
  • Frag Grenades are now in slot 2.
  • Knives and Narcathium are now in slot 3.
  • The solo bolt pistol is now in slot 4.
  • Moved the garage objective in ex_bunker to a position where I hope it will be easier to capture (but not too easy) to  prevent further 1st objective stalemates.

Balance
  • Buffed Sniper rifle from 2.2 seconds per shot to 2.0 seconds per shot.
  • Nerfed the tyranid warriors ability to absorb weapon recoil, so stance will have a greater effect on their accuracy.
  • Nerfed Warrior Venom Cannon range and damage by 10%.
  • Increased Carnifex class cost from 150 to 175 points.
  • Reduced Carnifex Devouer wargear cost from 125 to 100 points.
  • Reduced Carnifex Venomcannon wargear cost from 275 to 250 points.

Bug Fix
  • Turned all ex_bunker dropzones to face the entrance to their spawn room.

Future Plans

Alpha 9.07 is a collection balance tweaks and bug fixes, specifically for the space marine scout and tyranid warrior.

These balance tweaks should make the sniper rifle less the hand of god and more a rifle for shooting snipe with.

Tyranid warriors have been tweaked with the goal of making them an equal match for the low tier space marine classes, while making the venomcannon a viable option again.

Carnifex pricing has been adjusted to make it more economical to use the screamer killer wargear, while keeping the more powerful load-outs rare.

Due to issues with 9.07 making that version impractical to play i've had to put together a "B" patch to address those bugs.  The "B" patch should be installed over the top of version 9.07 and does not include all the changes in version 9.07.

Install the latest Exterminatus Alpha
  • If you already have EX alpha, delete it.
  • Run the alpha installer and follow it's instructions.
  • Restart Steam.  You should now see the Exterminatus Alpha listed in your library.

Alpha 9.07 Balance Changes
  • Nerfed Sniper rifle reload time from 1 second to 3 seconds.
  • Nerfed Sniper rifle from 1 second per shot to 2.2 seconds per shot.
  • Nerfed Sniper rifle damage from 110 per shot to 50 per shot.
  • Reduced Sniper rifle cost from 225 to 10 points.
  • Buffed Shotgun damage from 35 to 46 per shot.
  • Buffed Devourer ammo regeneration rate from 0.75 to 0.5 seconds per shot (both warrior and fex versions).
  • Nerfed Warrior Devourer damage from 26 per shot to 23 per shot. to give the same DPS as the shotgun.
  • Nerfed Warrior Devourer range from 3000 to 1000 units to match the shotgun.
  • Buffed Warrior Venom Cannon range and damage by 50%.
  • Reduced Carnifex class cost from 250 to 150 points.
  • Increased Carnifex Devouer wargear cost from 50 to 125 points.
  • Increased Carnifex Venomcannon wargear cost from 175 to 275 points.

Tweaks
  • Reduced the influence of stance on spread and recoil from 0.3 to 0.2 per factor.  This should make moving with the boltgun more accurate, while still favouring a fixed or crouching firing position.
  • Tweaked the Sniper rifle to better enforce it's maximum range (3000 units).
  • Tweaked the Sniper rifle tracer to remain longer after each shot.
  • Tweaked the Warrior Devourer to fire 5 pellets per shot (4 damage per pellet).  Making it easier to hit, but less effective against armour.
  • Tweaked hitboxes on the Imperial Terminator, Specialist and Assault marine to bring them into line with their CSM counterparts.

Bug Fix
  • Fixed the chaos havoc crouching with a heavy bolter animation, so he does not appear ot levitate.
  • Fixed the scoreboard crashing the client.
  • Fixed tyranids being unable to save points for better Carnifex wargear.
