Plasma Hot Fix

5.03 proved to be a little more "beta" than usual, so i'm releasing a hot fix in the form of beta 5.04 today.

Give your thanks to Stahlhagel and ]OX[Typheron when you see them in-game for their bug reports and feedback.

5.04 has the following changes:

  • The plasma pistol's rate of fire has been limited to one shot every 0.8 seconds.  Take your time and aim, plasma spam wont work anymore.
  • The visual effect for the plasma bolt has been scaled down to 50%
  • Plasma bolt damage has been reduced to 50 from 80.  It's more like a bolt gun hit than a cannon now.
  • The plasma pistol combo has had it's missing materials and animation glitches fixed.
  • The experimental particle system code has been removed from the meltagun.  No more red X blinding.

As usual check the Downloads Page for the latest patch and installer.

There is going to be a scheduled game to test the bug fixes and balance changes in 5.04 between 14:00 and 15:00 BST on Sunday the 27th.  See you there.

June News Update - Plasma Pistols are here

Exterminatus mod for the Source game engine, news update for June 2010.  This month we have a new open beta version 5.03 that aims to fix a client crash during map changes, replace the Veterans Inferno pistol with a Plasma pistol and add a new Tactial overview window.

During the initial development of EX it appears I made a bit of a fluff up with the intermission code that switches from one map to another when the round is won.  If the new map takes too long to load EX was trying to load the next map in the server's rotation.  This occasionally caused servers to prefer faster loading maps and clients to crash when they couldn't to cope with having loaded a different map to the one the server now wants to play.  This rather tricky bug to track down has been diagnosed and squished since the last update and it's fix is part of Beta 5.03.  If you experience any more crashes during map change please Report It

In the warhammer universe Inferno pistols are incredibly rare.  During the initial development of EX I decided to include inferno pistols to save on the different types of weapon effects I would have to code for.  Now the mod has matured a bit and i'm not so pressed I have decided to replace the Inferno pistol, with a slightly more conventional weapon.  From beta 5.03 onwards Veteran's will be equipped with a combination of chainsword and plasma pistol.  Due to it being so incredibly new to the mod the plasma pistol may have bugs that are unknown, if you find bugs in this new combo weapon please let me know.

A few times to have something  has been requested to shows the status of all the objectives in the current map.  The new "Tactial Overview" window ( F1 by default ), is built around this concept.   The overview also shows you your team, mission, class and the amount of ammunition you have for each of your weapons.  More features (like a mini-map) may be added to the Overview in later betas, depending on demand.  As always suggestions and bug reports welcome on the EX forum.

I never did get any of the sound effects I mentioned in the last news update made, so i've had to re-use other sounds from EX and the Source SDK.  If you think it sounds bad now, consider how much worse it would be if it was me making "pew pew" noises into a headset.

As usual all the download mirrors for this new version can be found on the Downloads Page

The votes have been counted... We have a winner!

May news update for Exterminatus, Warhammer 40,000 themed mod for Half-Life 2.  The next beta of EX is not yet ready, however I thought I should post to announce the result of poll I mentioned in the previous news.  We put to the vote the choice of what feature should be added to EX next.  The result with 40% of the vote and a clear majority is "Terminators & Genestealers".

The lure of tactical dreadnought armor and an extra early game option of the tyranids won though with the EX forum members, beating "Ammo dumps & Bio-mods" into a distant second.  Although enthusiastic team members have leapt in making a start on player models for the new classes we still have a lot of work to do to get them in-game.

40k rules lawyers have politely pointed out the EX veteran's inferno pistol clashes with the warhammer universe.  To correct this ChromeAngel is working on replacing the Inferno pistol with a more conventional Plasma pistol, using a model we received in trade from the Renegade 40k mod.  He's hoping to i include this new weapon in the next beta.

The EX team has no sound technician, so we're looking for volunteers to contribute any of the following sound effects for the new classes: Stormbolter (firing & reloading), Powerfist (hit & miss), Terminator footstep, 'stealer talons (hit & miss), footstep, injury & death, Plasma pistol (firing & reloading), Plasma bolt (traveling loop & impact).

One of the EX community regulars Nic2 is looking at the AI code to get Tyranid brood creatures working in EX.   A complex feature we had originaly planned for EX that had been shelved in order to deliver the public beta we have.  EX community members "Dark Marine" and "Cowz with gunz" have also been busy working on their own maps for EX.  I look forward to seeing the battle front of the war between the imperium and the tyranid fleet expanded with more maps.

About Exterminatus

Two teams/species featured in the first version of EX are the Imperium of Man (represented by tactical marines of Ultramarines chapter of the Adeptus Astartes) and Tyranid Hive Mind (represendted by creatures of Hive Fleet Behemoth).

Each map plays through a series of objectives, capturing the final objective delivers victory to your team. Players that do well in combat or by capturing objectives are rewarded with the option to play better classes. Each team has four playable classes, a standard class and three unlockable classes.

More information about the gameplay of EX can be found in the player manual we are writing. If you have any questions please feel free to post them on the EX forum.
